Disability Insurance—What Are My Benefits?

The union has received several questions concerning short term disability insurance.  If you were covered under the previous policy last year please disregard the questionnaire you may have received.  If you have never had short term disability coverage prior to 2006 and received a questionnaire you must complete and return this form for consideration of coverage.   This insurance is not a group policy but classified as additional insurance available for purchase through AirTran.
Short term disability insurance is coverage that begins on the 31st day of your illness.  If you believe that you will be out of work for an extended amount of time it is suggested that you contact HR to have all paperwork completed prior to the 31st day.  This insurance will cover 50% of your monthly salary based on the average of the 3 months salary prior to your illness.  On the 181st day long term disability insurance coverage will begin.  Through contractual agreement AirTran provides for this coverage free of charge.

FMLA continues to be an ongoing problem.  If you have an illness or will be a care giver for an ill family member that will cause you to be out of work more than four days it is advised that you complete the FMLA paperwork. This will eliminate any disciplinary action from AirTran.  This program will cover you for 12 consecutive months for up to 12 weeks of absence.  To qualify you must have been employed for one year and worked a total of 1250 hours.  Contrary to belief this is not limited to flight hours.  The 1250 hours are the total hours you are on duty. If you do not qualify you can continue to apply until you have accrued enough hours.

Workers compensation insurance is offered when an employee has been injured on the job.  This insurance covers any medical/prescription bills and 66% of salary after the 7th day of an injury.  You lose pay for the first week unless you are out of work for 21 days or longer.  The payment will then be retroactive.  If the doctor releases you for light duty you do not continue to keep your schedule as if you were working as a flight attendant.  You are now considered to be in a different employee group and will be scheduled as such.  This means if you are injured on the last day of a 4 day trip and are scheduled for 7 days off you will not receive those 7 days off.  You will be required to work light duty as scheduled by the company.  You are required to accept light duty and if you do not AirTran has the option to terminate your employment.  Anytime during the first 15 days of light duty you can notify the company that you cannot physically perform your duties required in the light duty.  You will be immediately released and scheduled additional doctor appointments.  These rules are in force because Georgia is a right to work state.

If you have additional questions concerning these topics please contact a union representative, HR, or the Georgia Insurance Commissioner.
