Pegasus Project

The Pegasus Project was founded in 1993 by members of the Association of Flight Attendants.  The “Project” has helped flight attendants with a range of conditions including:  Cancer, Lupus, Severe Back Injury and Disc Degeneration, Addiction to pain Medication, Clinical Depression, Injury from Turbulence, Degenerative Nerve Disease, Hepatitis, AIDS and HIV.

The mission of the Pegasus Project is to provide short-term emergency grants for members of the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) who are in need of financial assistance due to critical, life-threatening illness or injury.  These efforts are accomplished with compassion, confidentiality and the preservation of dignity and respect for the individuals concerned.

The goal of the ‘Project” is to provide members with funds to cover the basic necessities of life. Currently only members of AFA experiencing a critical, life-threatening illness or injury are eligible to receive grants when they are unable to perform their flight attendant duties and as a result are unable to fly.  Pegasus is a “fund of last resort.”  Grants are awarded on a month-to-month basis to members who have completed the application process and who have been determined by the Review Board to meet the criteria for grant eligibility.  This process requires a diagnosis from your medical practitioner as to the disability status and anticipated prognosis and possible return to work date of the applicant member.  This information is necessary in order to preserve the integrity that the Pegasus Project’s mission is founded on.

Pegasus also provides a means to donate funds to a specific member(s) in need at a Local AFA Council.  This allows for members to earmark their donation to go to a specific member in need and receive a tax-deductible receipt for their donation.  The member in need must submit a Pegasus application showing the need for assistance and provide a signed release form allowing Pegasus to fundraise on their behalf.  If you know a particular person in need, please make them aware of the assistance available to them through the “Project.”

All donations to the Pegasus Project are tax deductible!  Please refer to the Pegasus Check-Off in the Contract, which provides for payroll deduction from the pay of each Flight Attendant who voluntarily authorizes such contributions.
